we begin in the dark
and birth is the death of us

Loyalty is tested as a powerful family is torn apart by grief, guilt, shame and duty, when dire choices between legality and morality are forced upon them. A proud, arrogant, megalomaniacal king butts heads with a strong, defiant woman and although his power over her is absolute, he must ultimately pay a terrible price for his actions.

Antigonick is Anne Carson’s translation of Sophocles’ 441BC tragedy, reimagined with an eye for Antigone’s—the character’s—history on the stage. Directed by Davina Wright and staged in Hobart’s Theatre Royal, the University of Tasmania’s 2022 production was scored with cello, voice, piano, and a haunting synth sound world.
